Paul Spong

For 22 years Paul has worked his way around the Music Business, starting as a Trumpet player with The National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Great Britain, and The European Youth Jazz Orchestra, moving between different styles of music, he started playing salsa and Samba with” Onward International” and “Sonido de Londres”, leaving them to join “Machito” for a European tour and Album recording (Machito). He then toured and recorded an Album with Shorty Rodgers (and his big band), who later became a great friend and influence. Paul started working in motion pictures at this time, appearing and playing in the Paul McCartney Film, “Give my regards to Broad Street”. This was then followed by playing on the Francis Ford Coppolla Film ”Tucker”Paul then joined Wham! At the start of their fast exploding career, recording (Wake me up before you go-go) and touring with them until they split in 1985,when Wham! Split paul had just finished Recording with Elton John (Ice on Fire)and appearing at Live Aid with Elton and George Michael,also at this time He was working with Pete Townsend on his” White City” Project (Album and Tour),after Live Aid and Wham!s Final Tour of USA and Wembley,Paul Started touring with Elton John recording the “Live in Australia,with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra” Album.In late 1987 after Elton’s tour Paul toured the usa with Charlie Watts and his Bigband , at the same time as recording an album with “Rolling Stones” (Steel Wheels)he joined a new group, Wet, Wet, Wet,

Staying with the Wets for 10 years Touring and recording Seven Albums, including “Love is all around” for the movie “Four Weddings and a Funeral”

During his time with the wets Paul married and moved to New York (1992) Playing on Broadway in the show ”Crazy for you” and with Tito Puente’and Celia Cruz in New York and also performing “Quadrophenia” with The Who in Madison Square Garden and Hyde Park. In 1996 Paul moved back to the UK and Carried on working as a freelance session player playing for TV shows and Pop records and movie soundtracks,(James Bond “Tomorrow never dies”, and Kenneth Branagh’s “Loves Labour Lost”)and appearing as the Bandleader and playing on the soundtrack in John Madden’s Film “Captain Correlli’s Mandolin”

Paul then joined Robbie Williams at the Brit Awards in 1999 and continues to record and tour with Robbie including Live at Knebworth in Summer 2003. Early in 2001Paul started his career as a Music Supervisor on the Film “Shoreditch” Starring Joley Richardson and Shane Richie ,Producing and Recording Elton John (“Makin’ Whoopee”),Dane Bowers(Begin the Beguine,Ain’t misbehavin’) and Jacqui Dankworth ( Body and Soul) for the soundtrack, placing songs and recording the underscore and co-ordinating with his many contacts in the music and Movie Industry.

His next film was released late 2004 called “American Daylight” Directed by Academy Award Winner Roger Christian featuring Music from Massive Attack,Elton John, Wet Wet Wet ,Jaimeson,Joan Baez and Nitin Sawhney with Score by Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash.

Paul is Currently also worked with Roger Christian on “Gilgemesh” an Historical Epic Produced by Stonelock Pictures.
